Acceptance and institution
Two gatekeeping requirements sit before everything else, and neither can be fixed later.
A letter of acceptance from an institution confirmed to be on the current designated learning institution list
A provincial or territorial attestation letter, or written confirmation that your category is exempt
Confirmation that the programme itself leads to a post-graduation work permit, if that matters to your plan
Tuition deposit paid, or a receipt showing the first instalment
Financial capacity
The most common ground of refusal by a wide margin. Provenance matters more than the balance.
Funds covering first-year tuition plus the current living cost requirement for your province and family size
Four to six months of bank statements showing a settled, explainable pattern
A written explanation with evidence for the source of any large or recent deposit
If a sponsor is funding you: their income documents, relationship proof, and a signed undertaking
A GIC, approved education loan, or scholarship letter, where applicable
Your study plan
The document that decides borderline cases. Officers read it before anything else.
A written statement of purpose explaining why this programme, this institution, and this country
A clear, credible link between your previous studies or career and the programme you have chosen
A specific explanation of what you will do with the qualification after you return home
An honest explanation of any study gap, career change, or step down in academic level
Ties and temporary intent
A study permit is still a temporary document. The officer must believe you will leave.
Documented family, property, or business ties in your home country
Evidence of employment to return to, or a career path that requires returning
Prior travel history showing you complied with other countries' visa conditions
Documents and admissibility
Slow-moving items. Start these early or they will delay everything.
Passport valid well beyond your intended programme end date
Language test results, where your institution or category requires them
Immigration medical examination and police certificates, where required
Certified translations of every document not in English or French

Application strength, out of 100
Tick everything you can already document today. Be honest, because an officer will be.
This is an internal preparation aid, not an IRCC scoring system. Officers assess study permit applications holistically, and no checklist guarantees an outcome. Never submit fabricated or altered documents, including bank statements: misrepresentation carries a five year bar and is treated far more seriously than a weak application.
