The 2026 intake has closed. The August window was the last one this year.

The RCIP is not a points race. It asks a simpler question: does a local employer need you, and will you stay? That makes it one of the most realistic permanent residence pathways available in 2026 for people open to living in Northern Ontario.

The RCIP moves in a specific order. Understanding it prevents a great deal of wasted effort, and explains why the employer, not the applicant, starts the clock.
A local employer inside the community boundary applies to that community’s economic development organisation to become a designated employer. Only designated employers can support an RCIP candidate. If your employer is not on the list yet, this is where we start.
The designated employer submits a recommendation application for you through the community portal. Communities process complete applications on their own timelines. Sault Ste. Marie, for example, takes about six weeks. Once approved you receive an official recommendation letter, valid for six months.
With your recommendation letter, job offer, language results, education assessment and proof of funds, you apply to IRCC for permanent residence. The principal applicant PR fee is $1,525, with additional fees for family members.
The RCIP uses pass-or-fail criteria set by IRCC. You must meet all of them, and show that you can become economically established and genuinely intend to live in the community.
If you graduated from a public post-secondary institution in the recommending community, with an eligible credential of two years or longer and subject to other conditions, you may be exempt from the work-experience requirement altogether.
That makes the RCIP unusually attractive to international students who studied in the Sault, and it is one of the first things we check.
Launched the same day as the RCIP, the FCIP connects French-speaking skilled workers with designated employers in six francophone-minority communities outside Quebec. It works the same way, employer-driven and community-endorsed, but the language requirement is French. If you speak French, this is a second door worth testing.
We advise on all fourteen RCIP communities and the six francophone FCIP communities. We also happen to be based inside one of them, which means we understand how these files are really decided at community level, not just how the rules read from a distance.

Yes. The RCIP is employer-driven: you must have a genuine, full-time, permanent job offer from a designated employer in an RCIP community in a priority occupation before you can be recommended.
At least 1,560 hours, which is one year, of relevant work experience within the last three years. Part-time hours can be combined to reach the total.

It depends on your job’s NOC TEER category: generally CLB 6 for TEER 0 and 1, CLB 5 for TEER 2 and 3, and CLB 4 for TEER 4 and 5, in all four abilities. Some occupations may require more.

An employer inside the Sault Ste. Marie boundary can apply to the community to become designated. It is a step we help coordinate, and it is often the fastest route for a candidate who already has a willing employer.
