Changes this year. The sectors did not change mid-year, but the scoring did. Sector points rose from 5 to 15 and most occupation points were cut sharply, effective with the August intake. A candidate scored on the old grid may rank very differently now.

The occupation list, and its traps

Pictou County publishes 25 priority occupations. Being on that list is necessary but not sufficient, and the detail below is where most self-prepared applications come apart.

Three occupations were removed effective August 2026: Business systems specialists (21221), Software developers (21232) and Construction trades helpers (75110). Three were added: plasterers and drywall installers, Material Handler (75101) and Assemblers of other wood products (94211). The community publishes two different NOC codes for the plastering occupation, 73210 on one page and 73102 on the grid, and has not corrected it.

The full list, with the codes and any wage requirements, is published by the community: see the official occupation list. We do not reproduce it here, because it changes mid-year and a stale copy is worse than no copy.

Worth knowing

Nova Scotia adds its own layer: employers need an Employer Registration Certificate from NS Labour Standards, and recruiters need a Foreign Worker Recruiter Licence. Charging a worker a fee to find them employment is illegal in Nova Scotia. The candidates page still carries stale 2025 text saying 10 recommendations per intake, which contradicts the figure of 7 published elsewhere on the same site.
