RCIP West Kootenay 2026: intake status, priority sectors and occupations

What the West Kootenay Rural Community Immigration Pilot actually requires right now, taken from Community Futures Central Kootenay and re-checked every month. Most guides to this programme are months out of date.

Intake closed · verified 2 October 2026

Closed for 2026. September was the final intake and the full allocation of 200 is spent.

Critically, West Kootenay will NOT carry its application pool into 2027. Applications scoring below 91 will not be carried forward and a new application must be submitted. The 2027 intake date, priorities, criteria and allocation are all unconfirmed and are expected to change.

How candidates are selectedPoints-ranked. Minimum 50 points to enter the pool, but the real bar is far higher: the September cut-off was 93 and the June cut-off 91. A Steering Committee makes the final decision and there is no appeal.

Priority sectors for 2026

  • Business, Finance and Administration
  • Health
  • Education, Law and Social, Community and Government Services
  • Sales and Service
  • Trades, Transport and Equipment Operator
  • Manufacturing and Utilities
Changes this year. Business, Finance and Administration is new for 2026. Natural Resources and Agriculture was deliberately NOT selected, because seasonal and cyclical roles cannot meet the permanent, full-time, year-round requirement.

The occupation list, and its traps

West Kootenay publishes 25 priority occupations. Being on that list is necessary but not sufficient, and the detail below is where most self-prepared applications come apart.

Thirteen occupations are new for 2026 and seven were removed, including carpenters and heavy duty equipment mechanics, which remain available only as secondary occupations. Four TEER 5 occupations require experience in the same occupation rather than a related one.

The full list, with the codes and any wage requirements, is published by the community: see the official occupation list. We do not reproduce it here, because it changes mid-year and a stale copy is worse than no copy.

Caps and limits

  • 2026 allocation: 200 recommendations, now fully committed
  • Restaurant and Food Service Managers and Food and Beverage Servers capped at 5 per cent each
  • Most sectors: 3 applications per year for employers under 50 staff, 6 for larger
  • Sales and Service: 2 per year under 50 staff, 4 for larger
  • Health care and child care employers are exempt from per-employer caps

Who cannot use this programme

  • Fast food businesses, by the community's own detailed definition
  • Gas stations - all existing ones are being de-designated in 2026
  • Law firms, despite Law appearing in a sector name
  • Recruitment agencies and immigration consultants
  • Private households, which blocks the Home Support Worker route
  • Candidates on visitor status or without valid status

Processing

No processing time is published. The scale of competition is the real constraint: 367 eligible applications competed for 77 remaining recommendations in September.

Worth knowing

West Kootenay pays the closest attention to wages of any community, with a floor of $21.00 an hour or the Job Bank wage, whichever is higher, and wage top-ups cannot count toward it. It changed its own model mid-year, abandoning monthly first-come-first-served intakes in favour of two large scored windows, so anyone relying on guidance written before May 2026 is reading the wrong rules.
